Shadowbane… or Shadownuisance

by Shals on March 27th, 2008

Okay, so I’ve probably played this game for only 4 or 5 hours since their servers reopened the other day after full server wipes but I’m still asking myself what annoys me the most about this game. Is it the sub-par graphics, something that you would of thought was spectacular 15 years ago?

Although, of the few spell casting animations I have seen they do look pretty decent…

Necromancer Spell Effect

Here’s another shot of my Necromancer taking on a Large Ice Tiger, oooh!

Necromancer vs. Snow Tiger

Or is it the horrible user controls and/or interface? I’m sure it can be customized some but with the existing implementation of this I’d rather go see how many toothpicks I could stick in one of my eye’s than spend the time trying to figure it out.

No wonder it’s free these days, the only thing it has is probably PvP (which is, I’m guessing, 100% after you leave the newb area). I for one didn’t care to reach that point.

As for melee, I really didn’t bother to take my rogue beyond level 5, it was about as intense as a good old fashioned game of Pong on Atari 64.

Melee

Last, but not least, is the lag… which I guess is expected considering they wiped the servers and everyone scrambling to level up… whether their bots, a full group consisting of a single player, etc. This is basically what you’ll see for a few minutes upon logging in:

Logging in waiting for environment to load

Wide open landscape in the middle of town, yay!

So my recommendation is, if you’re bored of Solitaire, then definitely checkout this game because it may offer a little more excitement (but probably not much more, unless you can bare it long enough to engage in PvP… then again you probably need to be involved in a huge guild for that otherwise you’ll never make any progress).

My Ship Collection in Eve

by Shals on March 24th, 2008

Well, to begin the site off figured I’d start a Blog of ships I currently own and have the skills to pilot in Eve Online. I’ve only been playing for four months so the list is kind of short and going to exclude some ships that most everyone can pilot in no time (i.e. Frigates, Destroyers and Cruisers).

To start off, I’ll begin with the Drake Battlecruiser. This is probably the easiest ship to get into after you skill up the 3 ship types mentioned above. Primarily used to run level 3 missions and level 4 once you have appropriate skills to get a good tank setup going.

Drake, Caldari Battlecruiser

Next ship I went for are the Interceptors. These ships are crazy fast and their primary purpose is to speed to a player target and disrupt their warp, preventing them from leaving, while flying super fast around them because if you get webbed (basically a snare) you’re pretty much dead in a matter of seconds. Drones can also wreck havoc upon interceptors.

My favorite one is the Caldari Crow as seen below.

Crow, Caldari Interceptor

The other Caldari Interceptor is called the Raptor. As with most ship categories, each race has one with bonuses that increase whatever attributes towards guns and the other ship type has the bonuses towards missiles. The Raptor is more the gun ship and is seen below.

Raptor, Caldari Interceptor

After I finished up being able to fit Interceptors with all Tier 2 fittings I turned my attention towards Command Ships… the Nighthawk to be exact. In order to reach this long term goal it required many additional skills. First of which was the Assault Ship (or Assault Frigate, AF for short), unfortunately this ships lack any real purpose but is required for Heavy Assault Ships (commonly referred to as Heavy Assault Cruisers, or HAC’s, since their based on Cruisers) which is in turn required for the Nighthawk Command Ship.

Here is the Hawk, a Caldari Assault Ship which is mostly setup for missiles and pretty much the most useless one:

Hawk, Caldari Assault Ship (Frigate)

The Harpy, another Caldari Assault Ship seen below, can actually be pretty devistating with Blasters but the only problem is you need to close to within 2km and at that range you’ll more then likely be webbed, then promptly popped.

Harpy, Caldari Assault Ship (Frigate)

That’s about it for this blog, I’m currently working toward HAC’s now which I’m really looking forward to but it’s going to take me 32 days to just get into one (not fit it with all Tier 2 fittings, that’ll take awhile longer heh). After that I’m looking at another 150 days to get into the Nighthawk Command Ship fully Tier 2 fitted… but it’ll be a blast, I’m sure ;)
